WASHINGTON/TEHRAN, June 27, 2026 — The United States has launched military strikes against targets in Iran in response to what Washington says was an Iranian drone attack on a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it retaliated by targeting locations across the region where US forces are stationed, describing the strikes as a response to the Trump administration’s latest military action.
The developments come as the United States brokers diplomatic efforts elsewhere in the region. Israel and Lebanon have signed a US-backed framework agreement aimed at ending years of conflict, according to Washington.
However, Lebanon’s Hezbollah has rejected the agreement, with one of its lawmakers saying the deal would only “serve the interests” of Israel, raising fresh concerns over the durability of the proposed peace framework.
