The United Arab Emirates has confirmed it will withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the OPEC+ alliance, with the decision set to take effect on May 1, 2026.

The move follows a comprehensive review of the country’s oil production policy, current output levels, and future capacity. Officials say the decision aligns with the UAE’s long-term economic vision and its plans to accelerate investment in domestic energy production.

In a statement, the UAE emphasised that the shift is rooted in national interest while maintaining a commitment to supporting global energy market stability. The country noted that ongoing volatility, including disruptions in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, continues to influence supply dynamics, even as global demand is expected to grow over the medium to long term.

Despite stepping away from OPEC, the UAE reiterated its role as a reliable energy supplier, highlighting its production of cost-competitive and relatively lower-carbon oil. Authorities stated that future output increases will be introduced gradually, in line with global demand and market conditions.

The decision marks a significant shift after nearly six decades of cooperation. The UAE first joined OPEC in 1967, prior to the country’s formation in 1971, and has since played a key role in supporting oil market stability and collaboration among producing nations.

Officials described the exit as a strategic evolution rather than a departure from cooperation, stressing that the country will continue working with both producers and consumers to ensure a balanced and stable energy market.

Looking ahead, the UAE said its energy policy will be guided by national priorities, while continuing investments across oil, gas, renewable energy, and low-carbon technologies to support long-term sustainability and resilience in the global energy system.
