DUBAI- A tense maritime standoff continues in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies pass, as Iran signals a willingness to ease restrictions without linking the move to its nuclear programme.

According to regional officials familiar with the discussions, Iran has предложed reopening access to the strait independently of broader negotiations over its nuclear ambitions. The proposal, reportedly relayed to United States via Pakistan, also calls for the lifting of US-imposed restrictions on Iranian ports.

However, the initiative is expected to face resistance from Donald Trump, who has maintained that any agreement must include firm commitments on Iran’s nuclear programme as part of a comprehensive deal to restore maritime stability and secure a lasting ceasefire.

Speaking in a recent media interview, Trump reiterated his administration’s position, emphasizing that negotiations must address all key concerns, including nuclear development.

The partial closure of the strait has already sent shockwaves through global markets, pushing up oil and fuel prices at a politically sensitive time in the US. The disruption has also strained economies worldwide, increasing the cost of food, fertilizer, and other essential goods, while placing additional pressure on Gulf nations dependent on uninterrupted energy exports.

Under the current proposal, discussions surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities would be postponed, separating them from immediate efforts to stabilize one of the world’s most vital energy corridors.
