The United States has confirmed a steep rise in transport costs for football fans heading to the MetLife Stadium during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with round-trip train fares from Manhattan set to reach $150 per match.

This marks a nearly twelvefold increase from the usual $12.90 fare for the short 15-minute journey from Penn Station to East Rutherford. Officials expect around 40,000 spectators per game to rely on public transport, as most on-site parking will not be available.

New Jersey authorities have defended the price hike, stating it is necessary to recover transportation costs estimated at $62 million for the tournament, with only partial support from external funding. Governor Mikie Sherrill argued that taxpayers should not bear long-term financial burdens for hosting the event.

However, the move has sparked criticism. FIFA expressed surprise, noting that earlier agreements with host cities included provisions for free fan transport. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also questioned the steep pricing, calling it excessive for such a short trip.

Other host cities are taking a different approach. Locations such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia have pledged to maintain standard transit fares, supported by federal funding. In Kansas City and Houston, fans will benefit from significantly cheaper transport options, with some services costing as little as $1.25.

Alternative travel options near MetLife Stadium are also costly. Limited parking at nearby facilities, including the American Dream Mall, is being sold for up to $225, further adding to the financial strain on supporters.

With high ticket prices already expected, the surge in transport costs is likely to intensify concerns about affordability for fans attending one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
