Astronauts aboard Artemis II have safely returned to Earth after completing a groundbreaking journey around the Moon, marking the first crewed lunar flyby in more than 50 years.
The crew traveled in the Orion spacecraft, which splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California on Friday evening after a high-speed re-entry through Earth’s atmosphere. Recovery teams were already on standby and quickly secured the capsule before assisting the astronauts out.
On board were NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. All four were reported to be in good condition, with only minor communication issues during the journey.
The mission lasted 10 days and took the crew farther from Earth than any humans have traveled since the Apollo era. They flew around the far side of the Moon, testing critical systems that will be used in future missions.
Re-entry was one of the most intense phases of the mission. The spacecraft endured temperatures of up to 2,760°C as it sped through the atmosphere, creating a brief communication blackout. Contact was restored once parachutes deployed, allowing for a controlled descent into the ocean.
According to NASA officials, the mission is a major step forward in preparing for future lunar landings. Data collected from the flight will help improve navigation, life-support systems, and heat shield performance for upcoming missions, including Artemis IV.
Beyond its technical success, Artemis II also made history. Glover became the first person of colour to travel around the Moon, Koch the first woman, and Hansen the first non-American to take part in such a mission.
During their journey, the astronauts observed the Moon’s surface up close, witnessed a solar eclipse, and even spotted meteorite impacts. Commander Wiseman reflected on the experience, expressing hope that the mission would remind people on Earth of the planet’s beauty and importance.
The successful return of Artemis II signals a new era in human space exploration, bringing NASA one step closer to landing astronauts on the Moon once again.
