Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has achieved a groundbreaking global milestone, with its public bus fleet surpassing an average of two million kilometres per vehicle over 18 years of continuous operation.
The achievement positions Dubai at the forefront of transport efficiency and sustainability, underscoring the emirate’s commitment to long-term infrastructure excellence.
According to official data, the performance of Dubai’s buses significantly exceeds that of comparable fleets in leading global cities. Public transport systems in London and Singapore have recorded maximum operational distances of approximately 1.3 million and 1.4 million kilometres per bus respectively, well below Dubai’s benchmark.
The milestone is attributed to a strategic focus on maximising asset utilisation through advanced maintenance systems and adherence to circular economy principles. Continuous preventive and operational maintenance has enabled the fleet to exceed its projected lifespan while maintaining consistently high performance levels.
In 2025, Dubai’s bus network achieved an availability rate of over 93 percent, coupled with a notably low fault rate, reflecting the system’s reliability and operational discipline.
Officials emphasised that the accomplishment goes beyond numerical success, representing a broader vision of a smart and sustainable transport ecosystem. By integrating innovative technologies with efficient management practices, Dubai has built a resilient public transport network that enhances daily mobility and service quality.
The extended lifecycle of the fleet also delivers significant environmental and economic advantages, reducing the need for frequent vehicle replacements, lowering costs, and minimising manufacturing-related waste.
The milestone further cements Dubai’s reputation as a global leader in smart mobility, setting a new international standard for efficiency, sustainability, and long-term asset performance.
