Dubai: With just over a month remaining, Ramadan 2026 is drawing closer than many may expect. Based on early astronomical calculations and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) calendar, the holy month of fasting is anticipated to begin in mid-February. However, as with all Islamic months, the official start will only be confirmed after the crescent moon is sighted.

When is Ramadan 2026 expected to begin?

According to IACAD’s Hijri–Gregorian conversion calendar, Ramadan is expected to begin between February 17 and February 19, 2026, with Wednesday, February 18, emerging as the most likely first day. Final confirmation will be made by the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting from dawn until sunset, increased prayer, spiritual reflection, and acts of charity.

Key night of Ramadan: Laylat Al Qadr

Laylat Al Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is considered the holiest night of the Islamic year and falls within the last 10 nights of Ramadan. According to IACAD’s 2026 religious calendar, it is expected to occur on the night of Tuesday, March 17.

Muslims believe this night marks the first revelation of the Holy Quran and dedicate it to intensive worship and seeking forgiveness.

When will Ramadan end?

Based on current projections, Ramadan is expected to conclude on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The month may last either 29 or 30 days, depending on moon sightings at the end of the fasting period.

Eid Al Fitr 2026: Expected date and public holiday

Eid Al Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, is expected to fall on Friday, March 20, 2026, potentially creating the UAE’s first long weekend of the year.

In the UAE, the first three days of Shawwal are designated as public holidays. The total length of the break will be confirmed by the government and may vary depending on whether Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days.

Ramadan and school holidays in the UAE

The timing of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr in 2026 coincides with school spring breaks, offering families extended time together. Private schools in Dubai that follow a September academic calendar will begin spring break on March 16 and resume on March 30. Ministry of Education (MOE) curriculum schools will observe spring break from March 16 to March 29.

This overlap allows students and families to spend the final days of Ramadan and Eid celebrations together.

Important note

All dates mentioned are astronomical estimates. The official start and end of Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr, and the duration of public holidays will be formally announced by the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee and relevant government authorities.
