Royal Champs remain anchored at the foot of the Abu Dhabi T10 table with only three rounds left, but England’s 2019 World Cup hero Jason Roy is determined to help spark a late resurgence.
At 35, Roy knows he must summon the fearless firepower that defined his stellar run during England’s 2019 World Cup triumph — a campaign in which he relentlessly dismantled attacks and propelled his side into the semifinals before they clinched the trophy in a dramatic Super Over finale at Lord’s.
Roy showed glimpses of that aggressive brilliance with a fluent 42 off 25 balls against Ajman Titans on Sunday. Yet, despite his efforts, the Royal Champs again failed to cross the finish line. Three of their four matches have followed the same frustrating script: spirited performances undone by lapses in the final overs.
Still, Roy remains upbeat.
“A few things haven’t been working well for us, but we’re working hard to get the right mix and balance in the team,” he said. “It’s T10 cricket – sometimes you just need that one game to shift the momentum. I’m confident this team will bounce back.”
Despite their winless run, the dressing room remains united.
“Having guys like Angelo Mathews and Shakib Al Hasan is invaluable,” Roy added. “Their experience in different formats and pressure situations brings so much to the group.”
He also praised the steady guidance of head coach Sir Courtney Walsh.
“With Walsh leading us, we have the leadership and knowledge to turn this around. As a unit, we’re backing ourselves and backing each other.”
Roy did, however, acknowledge the physical challenge of competing in cricket’s most condensed format.
“Fitness and recovery are crucial in such a gruelling schedule. We’re managing our resources carefully to ensure everyone is ready when needed.”
The Royal Champs’ next opportunity to revive their campaign comes on November 26 when they face the Aspin Stallions.
