Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court has ordered two men convicted of electronic fraud to repay Dh5,000 they illegally withdrew from a young man’s bank account, along with Dh2,000 in compensation for the financial and emotional damage he suffered.
The case began when the victim came across an online promotion for a discounted chicken nuggets meal from a well-known restaurant.
After contacting the supposed sellers, he was instructed to pay Dh11 through a link they provided. Once he clicked the link, Dh5,000 was siphoned from his account.
Both men were previously convicted in criminal court of fraud and sentenced to three months in prison, fined Dh20,000 each, and ordered deported.
The victim later filed a civil lawsuit seeking repayment of the stolen sum and additional compensation.

In its ruling, the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court cited the Civil Transactions Law, which states that no one may take another person’s money without legal justification.
The court said the criminal judgment had established the defendants’ guilt beyond doubt and left no room for reconsideration of the facts.
The judges concluded that the defendants’ actions caused both financial and psychological harm, warranting compensation.
The court ordered the men to pay the victim a total of Dh7,000, in addition to covering legal fees and court costs.
