Air Cargo Sector Set for 5.5% Growth in 2025 Despite Global Headwinds, Says IATA
The global air cargo industry is on course for 5.5% growth in 2025, outpacing projected global GDP expansion, according to Brendan Sullivan, Global Head of Cargo at the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
During the opening day of the World Cargo Symposium 2025 in Dubai, Sullivan emphasized that the sector remains resilient despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
He pointed to a strong performance in 2024, driven by improved global demand, and said that momentum is expected to carry through into 2025.
Sullivan highlighted the Middle East, particularly the UAE, as well-positioned to align with global growth trends, citing the region’s advanced infrastructure and continued investment in logistics.
“What we’ve heard from Emirates SkyCargo confirms that this region is highly connected to the world and is making significant investments in infrastructure and customer-centric solutions,”
he said.
The region is also poised to expand its footprint in high-value specialized cargo segments such as pharmaceuticals and perishables, which remain heavily reliant on air transport and are expected to grow significantly.
On challenges facing the industry, Sullivan noted that delays in new aircraft deliveries could hinder future expansion and fuel efficiency. While the current fleet remains operational and fully utilized, its age could impact long-term efficiency more than day-to-day capacity.
Overall, Sullivan’s remarks underscore a cautiously optimistic outlook for air cargo, with growth anchored in strong demand, regional investment, and strategic focus on high-value sectors.
