A Kannada actress was arrested in Bangalore for allegedly smuggling 14.8kg of gold while coming from Dubai, several Indian media outlets reported on Wednesday.
Ranya Rao was arrested at Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport on Monday night and has been remanded to a 14-day judicial custody.
As per media reports, the 31-year-old actress had been under scrutiny due to her frequent trips to Dubai. The suspicion arose after authorities noticed that she was flew to the city four times within a span of just 15 days.
Investigations revealed that the actress was wearing large portions of the smuggled gold and had concealed some bars in her clothing.
Rao claimed connections to Karnataka’s Director General of Police, saying she was his daughter and contacted local police to escort her home, as per reports. The director general is a senior Indian Police Service officer, K. Ramachandra Rao, who is also her stepfather.
Local authorities are currently investigating if she received any help from law enforcement officers and whether she is part of a larger smuggling network.
