Mohammed bin Rashid Approves Dubai Walk Master Plan to Transform Emirate into a Pedestrian-Friendly City
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the Dubai Walk Master Plan, a visionary initiative aimed at making Dubai one of the world’s most pedestrian-friendly cities.
The announcement was made in the presence of senior UAE leaders, including H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and other officials.
The plan envisions a 6,500 km network of interconnected walkways by 2040, with 3,300 km of new paths and 2,300 km of existing routes being upgraded. Designed to promote active lifestyles, the plan focuses on accessibility, safety, and comfort, aiming to increase pedestrian and soft mobility from 13% to 25%. Key features include 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses, expanded green spaces, and modern amenities such as shaded areas, interactive digital screens, and art installations.
Highlighting its transformative potential, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed stated,
“Dubai is committed to creating a healthy and happy urban environment, making walking a central part of our culture.”
The project aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the ’20-Minute City’ goal, ensuring 80% of residents can access essential services within a 20-minute commute. Landmark projects include the iconic ‘Future Loop,’ a 2 km elevated walkway near the Museum of the Future, and scenic routes in historical areas like Al Ras.
Scheduled for phased implementation from 2025 to 2040, the plan integrates advanced technology, including a smart app to track walking data and reward users for active participation. By blending innovative design with sustainability, the Dubai Walk Master Plan will reinforce Dubai’s position as a global leader in urban development.
