This year (2024) is not just an election year. It is the election year. 95 countries are set to hold elections, culminating in at least 49% of the people in the world going to the polls. Only 15 countries do not hold elections but for those going to the ballot box this year (while some have already done so), the results will prove consequential for years to come. Below are some of the many countries heading for the ballot box this year.
Russia.
While all indicators may point to another Putin win, the true vote breakdown may be viewed as a potential indicator of the strongman’s support and whether the Russians continue to back his war with Ukraine. Meanwhile, in Ukraine it’s unclear if the 2024 vote will go ahead while the nation is currently under martial law. Putin Win
United States of America
The November elections may unleash what analysts described as ‘the biggest danger to the world’. The fear culminates from the perceived return of Trump whose support is increasing amid legal scuffles while the incumbent Joe Biden’s advanced age and alleged ‘memory loss’ may be his biggest undoing. The wars between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Palestine have also negatively impacted on Biden’s reelection bid. Election can go either way.
United Kingdom
The Ruling Conservative party has been in power for nearly 14 years now but recent indications point to a revived Labour Party with the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak struggling to maintain his popularity in the party amid resignations and discord. Labour Win
Germany
Though the next federal elections in Germany will be held in 2025, state and local elections will be held in 2024, which can still have a significant political implication.
India
The world’s largest democracy, India’s general election are always closely watched. The next general election is expected later this year and will determine the composition of the lower house of parliament and thus the next Prime Minister.
South Africa.
One of Africa’s most powerful economies, South Africa will be going to the polls in May this year. The country has openly sided with Palestine and at the same time crossed paths with US and Israel.
Domestically, the government faces pressure from opposition due to economic turmoil. Lack of electricity and high cost of living is at the center of campaigning message by political players.
Internally, the ruling party ANC has been further weakened by the expulsion of its Former President Jacob Zuma who has since formed another party. However, indications are that the ruling party may win the elections. Worst case scenario, will be a coalition government.
These are just a few examples, and there are many more countries with scheduled elections in 2024, each with its own unique political context and significance.
