Meronk, who moved to Dubai two years ago, made a last minute switch to the breakaway circuit ahead of their opening event in Mayakoba despite securing one of the ten PGA Tour cards on offer through last season’s Race to Dubai Rankings.
The four-time DP World Tour winner has now revealed that despite the success he enjoyed last year, he didn’t find it as enjoyable as he should have done.
“I think the most important thing for me was the schedule,” said Meronk when asked what pushed him to make the move to LIV Golf.
“The last two years I had really great years in my career, but to be honest, I wasn’t enjoying it as much. I was just constantly on the road. We didn’t have a proper home, just packing from hotel to hotel, airport to airport. I was sitting with my parents and my girlfriend during Christmas, and I was just saying, yeah, I had a great year, but I didn’t really enjoy it.
“I remember times when I won in Italy, waking up on Monday, and I said, okay, great, I won the tournament. But then I have to start all over again, go to a new course, get my routine going again, and where is the joy?
“I think one of the most important things was the schedule and having more time to enjoy life with my family and friends.”
That busy schedule hasn’t allowed the four-time DP World Tour winner to enjoy the abundance of world-class facilities in this region as much as he would have liked, but that is all set to change.
“I’ll be based in Dubai,” Meronk confirmed when answering where he’ll be living following his move.
“I have been there the last two years, for maybe like two months a year. But now I’m planning to spend more time there.”
The World No.44 was speaking ahead of his second LIV Golf start of the season in Las Vegas, where he is hoping to be back to his best after a stressful few weeks, which was hampered further with illness.
“To be honest, the last couple of weeks were quite stressful for me,” he said.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen. I was actually stuck in San Diego preparing for my first PGA Tour event, and then suddenly I’m going to Mexico playing my first LIV event. A lot of things were happening at the same time.
“But at the end of the day, I really enjoyed my first week. We had some issues with food poisoning, as well, so it wasn’t an ideal week for me in terms of feeling well on the golf course, but the last couple of days finally I can feel like myself, and hopefully I can play my best golf this week, and I’m just excited to be with those guys on one team competing every week.
“As I said, last week was a completely new experience for me, but I really enjoyed it.”
