US and Iranian officials are meeting in Muscat, Oman, in a renewed diplomatic effort to ease escalating tensions and prevent possible military conflict.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is representing Tehran, while US President Donald Trump’s advisers, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are attending on behalf of Washington.
The talks are expected to focus mainly on Iran’s nuclear programme and the potential lifting of sanctions. However, the Trump administration is reportedly pushing to expand discussions to other issues — a move Iran has strongly opposed.
An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tehran hopes to secure “a fair, mutually satisfactory, and honourable agreement” on the nuclear issue.
The outcome of the meeting could play a crucial role in determining whether diplomacy prevails over confrontation in the region.
