DUBAI High-level talks between the United States and Iran are underway in Switzerland, with the meeting being facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar following several days of delays.
The United States delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance, while Iran is represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iranian officials say their primary objective is to ensure that all parties fully adhere to the interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict and reducing tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over the status of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Iran has claimed that the vital shipping route has been closed once again due to ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon. However, the United States military has disputed the claim, insisting that the waterway remains open and accessible to international maritime traffic.
The talks come amid continued violence in Lebanon despite an existing ceasefire agreement. Israeli military operations have reportedly resulted in dozens of casualties, while Hezbollah attacks over recent days have left at least six Israeli soldiers dead and approximately 20 others wounded.
Diplomats hope the Switzerland negotiations will help prevent further escalation and pave the way for broader regional stability.
