A Ukrainian drone attack has struck the Sterlitamak petrochemical plant in Russia’s Bashkortostan region, damaging part of its water-treatment facility but causing no injuries, regional officials said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred about 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) from the Ukrainian border in the Ural Mountains — one of the deepest drone strikes reported inside Russian territory.

According to Radiy Khabirov, the head of the Bashkortostan region, the plant remains operational despite a partial structural collapse. He said both drones used in the overnight assault were intercepted and destroyed.

Russia’s defence ministry reported that, in addition to the Bashkortostan incident, its air defence systems shot down 83 Ukrainian drones across seven other regions.

City authorities in Sterlitamak confirmed that all five workers present at the facility during the attack were unharmed.

Ukraine has not yet issued an official comment on the incident.
