UAE Schools Invest Fee Hikes in Teacher Salaries and Infrastructure Upgrades
Students returned to school on August 26 to find upgraded facilities, a result of significant infrastructure improvements made during the summer break.
The fee increases implemented earlier this year have been earmarked for enhancing various aspects of school environments, including smart classrooms, laboratories, and recreational amenities.
Across different emirates, school leaders emphasized that the two-month summer vacation is the ideal time for such renovations. The improvements include advanced ICT facilities, modern sports equipment, and enhanced libraries and resource centers.
Sangita Chima, Principal of Amity School Dubai, highlighted the impact of the fee revenue on school facilities:
“A significant portion of our revenue has been allocated to developing school infrastructure. This year, we’ve introduced a newly furnished IT laboratory for Grade 10 students, equipped with the latest technology and software to support diverse learning needs. Additionally, all labs have been upgraded to accommodate our increased student population.”
In Dubai, private schools were permitted to raise fees by up to 5.2% based on their performance in the latest Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) inspections. These funds have not only improved physical infrastructure but also supported teacher development and student programs.
James McDonald, Principal and CEO of GEMS Wesgreen International School – Sharjah, noted:
“While a portion of the fees goes towards enhancing our facilities, we also invest heavily in teacher development. This holistic approach ensures that students benefit from both state-of-the-art resources and skilled educators. Recent additions include robotics and STEAM rooms, renovated reception areas, and dedicated prayer rooms for secondary students.”
Simon Herbert, Head of School/CEO of GEMS International School – Al Khail, pointed out that fee increases are primarily allocated to teacher salaries.
“While maintaining high standards in school facilities is crucial, our primary focus is on supporting our teachers. The recent upgrades, including a new Primary Inclusion Centre and expanded arts rooms, reflect our commitment to serving our diverse community,”
Herbert said.
Parents and families visiting schools for the new academic year have been impressed by the enhanced lobby, reception, and admissions areas. The summer renovations also included a new sports hall and other significant facility improvements.
Overall, the comprehensive upgrades are set to create a more conducive learning environment and enhance the educational experience for students across Dubai and beyond.
