Dubai: The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA) has confirmed that UAE freelance visas continue to be issued and renewed as normal, dispelling rumours of a temporary suspension.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA, said that freelance visa operations are proceeding according to UAE laws and regulations. He urged residents to verify immigration updates through official government channels and not rely on unverified social media reports.
Authorities tighten checks to prevent misuse
Although the system remains operational, GDRFA has intensified inspections following reports of individuals misusing freelance visas for profit. Some were allegedly attempting to sell freelance permits under false pretences.
To address this, special inspection and monitoring teams have been deployed to oversee visa processing and market activities — with the goal of preventing illegal visa trading and safeguarding freelancers from scams.
Freelancers face stricter documentation and proof of activity
Visa consultants report that freelance visa applications now require more documentation to enhance transparency and ensure legitimacy.
“Some individuals were setting up fake companies to sell freelance visas. Now, authorities are ensuring that applicants’ experience truly matches their declared field,” explained Firose Khan, Managing Director of Arabian Business Centre (an Amer Centre in Dubai).
Renewals increasingly require bank statements showing regular client payments that align with the applicant’s registered profession. “Transparency is key,” Khan emphasised. “Freelancers must ensure their declared activities reflect their approved specialisation.”
Proof of qualifications and client contracts now vital
According to Sarah Negga, Relationship Manager at Luxe Incorporations, most free zones are now demanding portfolios, qualification certificates, client contracts, or prior work samples for both new and renewal applications.
“Authorities want to ensure that your freelance activity genuinely matches your expertise,” Negga said. She advised freelancers to keep all contracts, invoices, and proof of work readily available to avoid delays during processing.
In summary, the UAE’s freelance visa system remains open — but under tighter scrutiny and enhanced transparency measures to maintain integrity and protect legitimate professionals.
