For the Northen Hemisphere, December 21 is the first day of winter and for someone in the other pole, it’s the first day of Summer.
Scientists also assume that on this day the sun travels its shortest path through the sky, so the day has the fewest hours of daylight of the year. But when on one pole is at its farthest, the other is at its closest.
So your first day of winter is someone else’s first day of summer.
