Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a major infrastructure project to upgrade Al Wasl Road, aiming to cut travel time by 50% and improve traffic flow across a key 15-kilometre stretch.

The project supports Dubai’s wider plans to accommodate urban expansion and enhance road capacity in line with the emirate’s rapid growth.

The development spans from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street and includes six intersection upgrades and five tunnels totalling 3,850 metres. Al Wasl Road will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction, increasing its capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour.

RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the initiative forms part of a broader master plan to upgrade Dubai’s road network, including enhancements to Umm Suqeim and Al Safa Streets. In addition to easing congestion, the project will feature pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, and landscaped urban spaces.

Among the key components are tunnels at major intersections such as Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, and Al Safa Streets. These are designed to handle high vehicle volumes, including a 750-metre tunnel at Umm Al Sheif capable of managing 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The project also complements upgrades to Umm Suqeim Street and Al Qudra Road. These works include bridges, tunnels, and added lanes to accommodate increasing traffic from key residential and industrial areas, benefiting over two million residents.

Once complete, the integrated upgrades are expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve connectivity between vital districts, positioning the road network to better support Dubai’s urban and economic growth.
