Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reported major gains in bus operations after deploying artificial intelligence, big data, and advanced analytics to improve punctuality, cut emissions, and enhance passenger safety.
Marwan Al Zarooni, Director of Buses at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said bus punctuality improved by more than 50 percent through real-time adjustments to operating schedules. The authority also achieved a 4 percent reduction in trip cancellations using an AI-powered model, while new procedures to reduce idling helped lower carbon emissions.
RTA has also introduced a data-driven weather response system within its crisis management framework, designed to keep passengers safe during severe weather conditions. These innovations have been recognised with multiple awards, including the “Top Participating Department” in RTA’s 2024 Scientific Research Award and several publications in international journals.
Al Zarooni noted that artificial intelligence has become an integral part of daily operations, enabling RTA to anticipate and adapt to challenges while delivering a faster, smarter, and more sustainable bus network.
Looking ahead, the RTA’s 2025–2030 roadmap includes expanding predictive analytics, launching AI-supported driver training, enhancing customer service through AI, and opening data platforms to encourage collaboration with academia and industry.
