MONTERREY, Mexico — Morocco produced a remarkable comeback to eliminate the Netherlands from the FIFA World Cup, winning 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout after an intense Round of 32 encounter ended 1-1 following extra time.

The Atlas Lions kept their hopes of World Cup glory alive thanks to goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, whose decisive save from Crysencio Summerville’s penalty paved the way for Ismael Saibari to calmly convert the winning spot-kick.

Morocco will now face Canada in the Round of 16 in Houston on Saturday.

The Netherlands looked destined for victory after Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Gakpo, playing under emotional circumstances following the recent loss of his unborn child, celebrated briefly before being embraced by teammates in a heartfelt moment.

However, Morocco refused to surrender. Deep into stoppage time, defender Issa Diop rose unmarked to head home Chemsdine Talbi’s inviting cross, sending the match into extra time.

Morocco had threatened throughout the contest and arguably created the better opportunities. Neil El Aynaoui nearly opened the scoring in the first half, only for Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to produce a brilliant reflex save. Moments later, Verbruggen again came to his side’s rescue by tipping Achraf Hakimi’s powerful effort over the crossbar.

The fiercely contested match featured several robust challenges, with Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio kept busy throughout. Saibari was fortunate to avoid harsher punishment after catching Jan Paul van Hecke with an elbow, while Van Hecke later battled on despite suffering a bloody head injury before producing a crunching tackle just before halftime.

The Netherlands dominated possession for long periods but struggled to convert control into clear-cut chances. Their best first-half effort came from Micky van de Ven, whose powerful strike was expertly pushed over the bar by Bounou.

Dutch coach Ronald Koeman appeared to change the game’s momentum after introducing Wout Weghorst in the second half. The striker immediately influenced proceedings by flicking on a long pass that released Summerville, who squared the ball for Gakpo to dive in and score.

Just as the Dutch looked set to advance, Diop’s stoppage-time equaliser stunned the Oranje and forced extra time.

Morocco continued to push for a winner, with Soufiane Rahimi denied by another outstanding save from Verbruggen during extra time.

The contest was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. After El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s opening penalty, Bounou’s heroics and Saibari’s composed finish completed a memorable comeback, sending the North Africans into the World Cup’s last 16 while ending the Netherlands’ campaign.
