DUBAI-Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Israel for his second official visit, where he is expected to hold high-level talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and address the Israeli parliament, the Knesset.

The visit underscores the deepening strategic and economic ties between New Delhi and Tel Aviv under Modi’s leadership. He was received upon arrival with an official welcome ceremony, signalling the importance Israel attaches to the trip.

In a statement released ahead of the meeting, Netanyahu described relations between the two countries as a “tremendous alliance,” adding that discussions would focus on expanding cooperation across several sectors.

Modi’s trip marks his second visit to Israel since becoming India’s prime minister, reflecting a steady strengthening of bilateral engagement in defence, technology, agriculture, water management and trade.

Expanding Economic Partnership

Economic cooperation is expected to feature prominently in the talks. In 2024, bilateral trade between India and Israel reached $3.9 billion, according to official figures. Mutual investments are currently estimated at approximately $800 million.

Last year, the two sides signed an investment agreement aimed at expanding trade and boosting joint ventures. The agreement was concluded during a visit to New Delhi by Israel’s finance minister, further consolidating economic links.

Analysts say India views Israel as a key partner in innovation and security cooperation, while Israel considers India a major strategic and economic ally in Asia.

Visit Amid Gaza War

Modi’s visit comes against the backdrop of Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, which began in October 2023. According to health authorities in Gaza, at least 72,073 people have been killed and 171,756 wounded since the conflict escalated.

India has previously called for restraint and emphasised the need for humanitarian assistance, while maintaining diplomatic ties with both Israel and Palestine.

The visit is expected to attract international attention, particularly as global scrutiny intensifies over developments in Gaza and regional security dynamics.

Further details on the outcomes of Modi’s meetings with Netanyahu and his address to the Knesset are expected later in the day.
