Freddie Aguilar, a legendary Filipino singer and songwriter, passed away at the age of 72 on Tuesday, the General Counsel of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (Federal Party of the Philippines) confirmed.

The star, who was also national executive vice-president of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), passed away at around 1.30am (Philippines time).

Some local news outlets say that his burial will also take place in the next 24 hours, for which preparations are underway.

He had been admitted to the Philippine Heart Centre, and his wife, Jovie, occasionally took to Facebook to share updates, with one saying that he was “always finding courage in the face of fear”.

Aguilar was known for hits like ‘Anak’ which became the best-selling Filipino record of all time, with over 33 million copies sold worldwide.

His music shaped generations, with a lot of his music focusing on social justice and nationalism — his songs like ‘Magdalena,’ ‘Mindanao’ and ‘Katarungan’ were also very successful.
