The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says Israel is inflicting “man-made” and “politically motivated starvation” on Gaza as the UN’s World Food Programme reports aid stocks in the enclave are completely depleted.
Michael Fakhri, UN rapporteur on the right to food, said Israel has blockaded Gaza for more than 50 days and continues “executing this starvation campaign with no repercussions”.
Medical sources tell Al Jazeera that at least 45 people were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since early on Friday and the daily death toll continues to mount.
At least 51,439 Palestinians have been confirmed killed and 117,416 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since it began 18 months ago.
The Gaza Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.
