In a landmark diplomatic engagement, Africa’s two sitting female presidents, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, convened in Dar es Salaam to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and advancing women’s leadership across the continent.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who made history in March 2025 as Namibia’s first female head of state, was warmly received by President Hassan. Their meeting underscored the growing influence of women in African leadership and highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations.
President Hassan, reflecting on their shared history, remarked, “Tanzania is proud to see the daughter we nurtured and raised with love and compassion rise to the highest office in Namibia.” She emphasized the importance of unity among African nations to address common challenges such as economic development, climate change, and regional security.
During their discussions, the two leaders explored avenues for enhancing cooperation in trade, education, and cultural exchange. They also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in leadership roles across Africa.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed gratitude for Tanzania’s support during Namibia’s liberation struggle and acknowledged the role Tanzania played in her personal and political development. She stated, “Our shared history binds us, and together, we can forge a future of prosperity and equality for our people.”
The meeting concluded with both presidents pledging to continue working closely to strengthen the bonds between Namibia and Tanzania and to champion the cause of women’s leadership on the African continent.
