Dubai Launches AI-Powered Driver Risk Scoring System to Boost Road Safety
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled an AI-driven platform designed to assess driver risk levels based on individual traffic history, including accidents, fines and black points.

The initiative, called Driver Risk Score, is currently in the trial phase, with a decision on a public rollout expected later.

Developed using artificial intelligence and big data, the system analyses integrated information across RTA platforms. Drivers can input their Emirates ID and driving licence to generate a personalised risk score, categorised as low, medium or high.

“This will tell you how risky you are as a driver by looking at your past behaviour,”
said Mohammed AlMudharreb, executive director of the Corporate Technical Support Services Sector and chief AI officer at RTA, during a panel at Dubai AI Week.

“It will help identify drivers who need more training and also support car insurance companies in tailoring premiums.”
With Dubai’s population nearing 4 million and vehicle registrations rising sharply—from 4.01 million in 2023 to 4.38 million in 2024—authorities continue to push for enhanced road safety. The RTA regularly launches awareness campaigns and tech-driven initiatives aimed at reducing accidents and promoting responsible driving.

While the platform is currently used internally, future applications could include monetisation through partnerships with insurance providers. The RTA also plans to use the data to focus training on specific demographics, particularly younger drivers deemed higher risk.

By targeting high-risk behaviour, the Driver Risk Score aims to reduce traffic violations and improve road safety across the city.
