Thinking about moving to Dubai to work as a freelancer? Here’s a simple guide to help you understand who can apply, how much it costs, and how to start the process.
Do You Need a Degree to Get a Freelance Visa?
According to Liam Doherty from Connect Resources, you don’t need a degree to apply for a freelance visa in Dubai. Anyone with the right skills can apply.
However, your education level affects your visa designation:
Graphic designers (skilled level 1) usually need a degree.
Photographers (skilled level 3) can apply with a high school certificate or diploma.
If you don’t have these, you can still apply for an unskilled visa, but with a lower job title.
In short — a degree is not mandatory, but it helps you get a better designation and access to more freelance activities.
Can You Work in More Than One Field?
Yes. You can work in multiple areas, such as both photography and graphic design, if you are qualified in each.
Doherty explains that there are two main types of freelance arrangements:
Freelance Permit – Issued by a free zone. It acts as a business licence under your name and allows you to do multiple freelance activities.
Freelance Visa – This is a residency visa sponsored by a company that allows you to work as a freelancer.
How Much Does a Freelance Visa Cost?
The cost depends on which free zone or business setup agency you use.
1-year freelance visa: around Dh7,000
2-year freelance visa: between Dh14,000 and Dh20,000
These visas must be renewed when they expire.
Can You Apply from Outside the UAE?
Yes, you can start the process while you are outside the UAE.
However, to complete the visa, you must travel to Dubai to do:
A medical test
Biometric registration
You can enter the UAE on a visit visa and then change your status to a residence visa. Make sure to finish this before your visit visa expires to avoid fines.
Do You Get a Workspace with the Visa?
Some free zones offer co-working spaces, flexi desks, or virtual offices as part of the freelance visa package.
Popular free zones that offer freelance licences include:
Dubai Internet City
Dubai Media City
Dubai Studio City
Dubai Design District
DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre)
Can You Open a Bank Account with a Freelance Visa?
Yes. A freelance visa gives you UAE residency, which allows you to open a personal bank account.
If you want to open a business (corporate) account, you’ll also need:
A trade licence
Proof of income
A company address
In Summary
No degree required, but it helps for skilled jobs.
You can work in more than one freelance area.
Costs start around Dh7,000 a year.
You can begin the process from outside the UAE, but must visit to finish it.
