Dubai Duty Free has made history by becoming the first airport retailer in the world to earn Autism Certification, receiving the prestigious Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).
This recognition underscores the retailer’s strong commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive shopping environment for autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers. It also aligns with Dubai’s broader goal of becoming a Certified Autism Destination, building on earlier certifications awarded to Dubai Airports and Emirates Airlines.
Over 4,800 employees across Dubai Duty Free’s operations completed specialised autism awareness training, achieving an impressive 98.76% completion rate in just 26 days. The programme equips staff to better assist customers with autism and other hidden disabilities.
As part of the initiative, Dubai Duty Free has adopted globally recognised accessibility practices, such as using the sunflower symbol to discreetly identify individuals who may need extra support. Frontline employees will wear sunflower pins, dedicated counters will display the symbol, and sensory kits will be available for travellers who require them. Each shift will also have an assigned “Autism Champion” to ensure consistent support.
“This milestone is a testament to our commitment to delivering inclusive service to our diverse customer base,” said Ramesh Cidambi, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free. “Travel should be a safe and welcoming experience for everyone.”
Additionally, Dubai Duty Free will act as a strategic partner of the upcoming AccessAbilities Expo, the region’s leading platform showcasing innovations that enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Through its foundation, the retailer continues to back initiatives that empower people of determination and promote community inclusivity.
