DP World has received the MV Höegh Sunrise, the world’s largest and most environmentally advanced car carrier, on its maiden call to Jebel Ali Port, marking a major milestone in sustainable shipping.
The Aurora-class vessel, designed with zero-carbon readiness, can run on future fuels such as ammonia and methanol. With capacity for 9,100 cars, it reduces carbon emissions per vehicle by 58 percent compared to current industry standards. The ship arrived from Europe carrying 1,200 vehicles.
A plaque ceremony at the port commemorated the arrival, attended by senior executives from DP World GCC and Höegh Autoliners. Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, said the vessel reinforces Dubai’s role as a global hub for the automotive industry while supporting greener supply chains.
Andreas Enger, CEO of Höegh Autoliners, highlighted the Aurora-class as a step toward sustainable deep-sea transport, noting the importance of partnering with logistics hubs like Jebel Ali to meet rising demand from carbon-conscious customers.
Dubai has rapidly expanded its automotive logistics capabilities to keep pace with global demand. DP World handled a record 1.3 million vehicles in 2024, a 53.6 percent increase from the previous year. The company recently opened a 2.6 million square foot vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4 and is developing what will be the world’s largest auto market, spanning 20 million square feet.
The arrival of the Höegh Sunrise underscores both DP World’s and Dubai’s commitment to advancing sustainable trade while cementing the emirate’s position as a leading hub for global automotive logistics.
