DP World is investing £170 million to introduce its groundbreaking BOXBAY Empty Superstack system at London Gateway, marking a major milestone in port automation and efficiency.

The high-tech system, first proven at Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, will redefine how empty containers are stored, handled, and transported.

The High Bay Storage (HBS) technology uses fully electric stacker cranes to store containers up to 16 tiers high within a fully automated, enclosed facility. This design boosts yard capacity, enhances safety, and reduces environmental impact by cutting down on manual rehandling and truck idle times.

Developed by BOXBAY, a joint venture between DP World and Germany’s SMS group, the system seamlessly integrates into existing port operations without requiring changes to landside or seaside infrastructure. Once complete, it will accommodate up to 27,000 TEU at London Gateway’s new all-electric Berth 4, significantly improving operational performance.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said the investment represents a leap forward in port innovation, combining scalability, automation, and sustainability. Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President for North Europe, added that the system will create a safer and more efficient working environment while enhancing reliability for customers.

The BOXBAY technology has already handled nearly half a million TEU during trials in Dubai, showcasing its potential to revolutionize container storage globally. DP World’s rollout of the system in the UK highlights its continued drive to set new standards in smart logistics and sustainable port management.

Construction at London Gateway is expected to take just over two years to complete.
