Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that its Green Hydrogen project has produced more than 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since its launch in May 2021, marking a significant milestone in the UAE’s clean energy transition.
The hydrogen has been used to generate over 1.15 gigawatt hours of clean electricity through a hydrogen gas engine, helping to reduce more than 515 tonnes of carbon emissions. Over 11 tonnes were supplied to ENOC to fuel hydrogen-powered vehicles and support industrial applications, including operations at the Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said the project supports the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy, the Net Zero 2050 goals, and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, while also advancing the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030.
The Green Hydrogen project, developed with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to produce hydrogen using solar energy. It generates about 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour and includes a storage system capable of holding up to 12 hours of production for use in nighttime power generation.
Positioned to expand across energy, transport, and industrial sectors, the project strengthens Dubai and the UAE’s global competitiveness in green hydrogen, with the country ranked first worldwide in green hydrogen competitiveness by Alvarez & Marsal’s 2024 report.
