A fragile pause in hostilities has emerged in the escalating Iran conflict after Donald Trump announced the suspension of United States military strikes, following Tehran’s agreement to a two-week ceasefire tied to the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Iran confirmed it would halt military action for the duration of the truce, with its foreign ministry stating that safe maritime passage through the critical oil transit route would be coordinated with its armed forces. The development marks a significant, albeit temporary, de-escalation in a conflict that has threatened regional stability and global energy supplies.

The breakthrough came after diplomatic intervention by Shehbaz Sharif, who urged Washington to extend its timeline for a deal and pressed Tehran to guarantee full access to the Strait. As part of the agreement, formal negotiations are now scheduled to begin on Friday in Islamabad, positioning Pakistan as a key intermediary in the crisis.

Meanwhile, the government of Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the US decision to pause attacks, but clarified that the ceasefire arrangement does not extend to Lebanon, leaving concerns of broader regional spillover unresolved.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global shipments, has been at the center of tensions throughout the conflict. Its reopening, even temporarily, is expected to ease immediate pressure on international markets and shipping lanes.

Despite the ceasefire, analysts caution that the situation remains volatile. The two-week window is seen as a critical opportunity for diplomacy, with the potential either to pave the way for a longer-term agreement or to collapse back into confrontation if talks fail.

Casualty figures and the humanitarian impact continue to mount across affected areas, with observers closely monitoring developments as negotiations approach.
