Defying all the odds, fighting adversaries and competition, a Ugandan expat in Dubai opened Limelight Hair salon in Dubai to cater for her African clientele base.
The salon was opened three years ago and Daily Times crew visited the area where they were greeted with warm hospitality and a lively atmosphere.
The décor is simple yet familiar, with elements reminiscent of home—from African music playing softly in the background to posters of popular African musicians or traditional hairstyles on display.
The stylists, mostly African, are skilled in offering a variety of services, including braiding and all with techniques and styles influenced by the vibrant African hair culture.
Talking to this publication, the Saloon’s manager who identified herself as Sami Montana, also from Uganda emphasized that a saloon moves beyond hairstyling but is also a place of networking and creating an impactful circle.
‘What makes these saloons special is the sense of community they foster. It’s not just a place for grooming, but also for conversation, laughter, and the exchange of stories from home. Many clients come not only to get a trim but also to catch up on African news, share experiences, and seek comfort in the familiar amidst the fast-paced life of Dubai’, said Ms Montana.
The saloon scene in Dubai has grown as more African expats seek places that cater to their specific grooming needs, blending traditional techniques with modern trends. It represents a cultural bridge, bringing a piece of African the heart of Dubai and offering a unique experience for those looking for more than just a hairstyle.

The manger further appreciated the saloon’s clientele who have stood by them amidst competitors while also acknowledging her superiors who she described as humble and business oriented.
