The United States and Iran have agreed on a roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement within 60 days following high-level negotiations held in Switzerland, according to mediators Pakistan and Qatar.
Officials from both mediating nations described the first day of talks as making “encouraging progress,” with both sides committing to continued diplomatic engagement. The discussions also resulted in the establishment of a “de-confliction cell” designed to help prevent escalation and support efforts to end military operations in Lebanon.
The negotiations come amid heightened regional tensions. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump warned of possible military action against Iran over its support for Hezbollah. In response, Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, cautioned Washington against using inflammatory rhetoric, stressing the need for dialogue over confrontation.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz reiterated that Israeli forces would remain in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to safeguard security interests. Hezbollah, on the other hand, has vowed to respond to any violations of the existing ceasefire agreement.
The Switzerland talks are being closely watched by the international community, with hopes that the 60-day roadmap could pave the way for a broader agreement capable of easing tensions across the Middle East.
