Dubai private schools weigh Friday distance learning during Ramadan 2026

DUBAI — Several private schools in Dubai are considering introducing distance learning on Fridays during Ramadan, following a similar move by the Ministry of Education for government schools.

The ministry recently confirmed that its “Ramadan with Family” initiative will continue for a second consecutive year, allowing public school students to attend remote classes on Fridays throughout the holy month. The programme is designed to give students more time with their families while maintaining academic continuity in line with Ramadan’s spiritual and social rhythms.

In response, Dubai’s private schools have been advised by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) to consult parents before implementing any similar measures. Schools may offer remote learning on Fridays during Ramadan, but only with majority parental consent and formal regulatory approval.

The discussion comes as families weigh academic demands against student wellbeing. Shorter school days and the physical impact of fasting often leave students fatigued, particularly during the first weeks of Ramadan.

In a circular sent to parents on Tuesday, Cambridge International School said it is carefully reviewing the option.

“As part of our commitment to supporting our students’ wellbeing while maintaining high academic standards, and in line with guidance from the KHDA, we are exploring the possibility of offering distance learning on Fridays during the holy month of Ramadan,” the school said.

However, the school stressed that academic obligations would remain unaffected. Students scheduled to sit examinations on Fridays would still be required to attend in person, and exam timetables would not be altered — a key assurance for senior students preparing for board assessments.

Similarly, Al Sadiq Islamic English School has sought feedback from parents before making any decision. In a circular, the school shared a survey link asking families whether they would support self-paced, asynchronous remote learning on Fridays during Ramadan.

“This is a consultation only. No decision will be made without majority support and KHDA approval,” the school said.

With Ramadan approaching, more private institutions are expected to review flexible learning options as they balance academic standards with student wellbeing.
