Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed two major pedestrian bridges on Sheikh Rashid Street and Al Mina Street, advancing its vision of a safer, more connected city for pedestrians and cyclists.

These developments form part of the broader Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project.

The newly completed bridges, measuring 91 and 109 metres in length respectively, feature lifts, staircases, and advanced electromechanical, fire safety, and remote monitoring systems. They join six other pedestrian and cyclist bridges currently under construction, five of which are expected to open by the end of 2025, with the sixth set for completion in early 2027.

RTA plans to build an additional 23 pedestrian bridges by 2030, guided by detailed field studies that consider population density, land use, public transport links, and tourism attractions. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General, said the initiative supports Dubai’s goal of a pedestrian-friendly city and enhances overall road safety.

Pedestrian infrastructure expansion has contributed to a dramatic decline in fatalities, from 9.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2007 to just 0.3 in 2024, a 97% reduction. Pedestrian satisfaction has risen to 88%, while pedestrian trips increased 6% in 2024, reaching 326 million, alongside a 5% growth in cycling trips.

Several under-construction bridges feature striking architectural designs. The Sheikh Zayed Road bridge, extending 528 metres, emphasizes connectivity with interwoven lines, while the Al Khail Road bridge, spanning 501 metres, incorporates light-inspired elements for a tranquil walking and cycling experience. Other bridges link key districts, including Dubai Hills, Al Barsha, and the Al Quoz Creative Zone, providing safer and more accessible routes for commuters and residents.

The RTA’s ongoing projects reflect Dubai’s commitment to sustainable mobility, integrating functionality, safety, and aesthetics to create a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly urban environment.
