UAE Schools Adjust Exam Schedules During Ramadan, Opt for Early Assessments and Alternative Evaluations
As the Holy Month of Ramadan is expected to begin around March 1, 2025, many UAE schools are adapting their academic schedules to accommodate the observance, ensuring a balanced approach for students during this time.
With Ramadan coinciding with the end-of-term exams for international curriculum schools and third-term exams for Indian curriculum schools, schools have adjusted their examination plans.
Stephen Brecken, Principal/CEO of GEMS Cambridge International School – Dubai, explained that Years 11 to 13 students would have mock exams before Ramadan. However, for Years 7 to 10, formal exams in Term 2 will be replaced with research-based learning projects and class assessments. This early decision received positive feedback from parents. All Term 3 exams will be held as usual.
At Regent Gulf Indian High School Dubai, S. Reshma, Principal, shared that exams for Grades 9 and 11 will conclude before Ramadan. For younger students (Grades 1-8), exams will begin on February 24, with scheduled breaks. Kindergarten students will continue with ongoing assessments.
GEMS International School – Al Khail’s Amanda Murphy, Head of Secondary School, noted that the academic calendar had been adjusted to minimize disruption to students, especially for Grade 11 and 12 students. Trial exams for Grade 12 will conclude by February 21, ensuring adequate preparation time.
Principals emphasized the importance of maintaining academic standards while prioritizing students’ well-being. To support students, schools will offer personalized intervention and online resources, especially for those preparing for board exams.
