Dubai: The UAE has introduced five major traffic rule updates that will significantly impact the way residents drive across the country. With more vehicles hitting the roads each year, authorities are taking bold steps to improve safety, reduce congestion, and ensure smoother travel for everyone.
Over the past two months, new regulations have rolled out across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman. These measures aim to curb accidents and improve road discipline. From new toll timings to lane restrictions and smart speed controls, here’s what every driver needs to know:
Rule 1: New Darb Toll Timings – Abu Dhabi
From September 1, 2025, Abu Dhabi’s Darb toll now applies from 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday—an earlier start than before (previously 5pm to 7pm).
Daily and monthly caps have been removed, meaning all trips during toll hours are now charged. The change is designed to ease rush-hour congestion and promote better traffic flow.
Rule 2: Variable Speed Limit on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road – Abu Dhabi
As of October 27, 2025, electronic signboards now display variable speed limits that adjust instantly based on traffic, accidents, weather, or roadworks.
The system uses live sensors and cameras, ensuring safer driving conditions while preventing confusion by updating limits before drivers reach the affected zone.
Rule 3: Delivery Riders Restricted from Fast Lanes – Dubai
Starting November 1, 2025, delivery riders are banned from using the leftmost and next-to-left lanes on five-lane roads in Dubai.
On three- or four-lane roads, they must avoid the fast lane. However, one- and two-lane roads remain unrestricted.
The move follows a rise in accidents involving delivery bikes in busy city areas, promoting safer lane discipline for all road users.
Rule 4: Sharjah Vehicle Lane Allocation
Sharjah’s new lane segregation system—effective November 1, 2025—designates separate lanes for motorcycles, delivery bikes, buses, and trucks.
Heavy vehicles and buses: Rightmost lane only
Motorcycles: No access to fast lanes
On four-lane roads: Right two lanes only
On three-lane roads: Middle or right lane
On two-lane roads: Right lane only
Violations attract fines of Dh1,500 for heavy vehicles, Dh500 for others, plus 12 black points.
Rule 5: Smart Speed Limiters for Taxis – Ajman
Ajman has equipped all taxis and limousines with AI-powered speed limiters that automatically sync with local road speed limits.
These devices adjust vehicle speed in real time, helping prevent overspeeding and protecting passengers and pedestrians alike.
Why These New UAE Road Rules Matter
As the UAE continues to grow, road safety remains a top priority. These new rules promote smoother traffic, reduce accident risks, and ensure fair use of road space. Residents are advised to visit official emirate websites for full rule details and compliance guidance.
