Dubai is taking a decisive step toward a more walkable future after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded the contract for Phase I of the Dubai Walk Master Plan in Al Ras.

The first phase will introduce the Historic Al Ras Walkway, featuring 12 kilometres of pedestrian paths alongside 5 kilometres of dedicated cycling tracks. The project will also restore 10 artistic spaces in collaboration with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, bringing together Emirati and local artists to enrich the district’s cultural appeal.

According to RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer, the initiative supports Dubai’s long-term vision of creating a pedestrian-friendly city. It aligns with the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 and advances the concept of a “20-minute city,” where residents can easily access essential services within a short distance.

The Al Ras Walkway will connect major heritage landmarks such as Al Fahidi Fort and the Al Shindagha Historic District, while integrating with 11 public transport stations across metro, bus, and marine networks. Its design prioritises both functionality and heritage preservation, with wider walkways, shaded areas, seating, and expanded green spaces.

Beyond infrastructure, the project embraces culture and creativity. Public art installations, murals, and smart lighting will highlight the district’s identity, complemented by ongoing cultural events and community programmes.

Looking ahead, the broader Dubai Walk Master Plan aims to develop more than 6,000 kilometres of walkways across 160 areas by 2040, along with 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses. Authorities also aim to increase the share of walking and soft mobility from 16 percent in 2025 to 25 percent by 2040.

Construction of Phase I is scheduled between 2025 and 2027, marking the beginning of a long-term transformation in how people move and experience the city.
