VANCOUVER – Switzerland secured a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw in their Round of 16 encounter on Tuesday.
The tightly contested match saw both sides produce disciplined defensive displays, leaving neither team able to find the breakthrough during 120 minutes of football.
Colombia created the first clear opportunity in the 21st minute when Gustavo Puerta curled a powerful effort toward goal, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced a spectacular save to keep the scores level.
Switzerland responded strongly after the first cooling break, with Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas denying Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye as the Europeans increased the pressure. Despite the improved attacking display, the first half ended without a goal.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams enjoying spells of possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances. Colombia’s dangerous winger Luis Díaz was effectively contained by the Swiss defence, while Luis Suárez missed one of his side’s better opportunities.
Switzerland nearly snatched victory in stoppage time when Dan Ndoye fired a low cross-shot across the face of goal, but no teammate was on hand to apply the finishing touch, sending the contest into extra time.
Colombia came closest to breaking the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes. Defender Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar from a corner, while Kobel produced another outstanding save to deny Jaminton Campaz. Campaz later squandered a golden chance to win the match late in extra time.
With neither side able to score, the match was decided from the penalty spot.
After both teams missed penalties early in the shootout, Kobel emerged as Switzerland’s hero by saving Cucho Hernández’s spot kick. Ruben Vargas then calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal a 4-3 shootout victory and send the Swiss into the last eight.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina national football team in Saturday’s quarterfinal in Kansas City after the South Americans staged a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt national football team.
The victory marks Switzerland’s first appearance in a World Cup quarterfinal since hosting the tournament in 1954, extending an impressive run built on defensive resilience and disciplined performances throughout the competition.
