The United Arab Emirates has strengthened its position as one of the world’s leading economies after securing 5th place globally in the prestigious IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2026.
The ranking, published by the World Competitiveness Centre at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, places the UAE among the world’s most competitive nations and recognizes its exceptional performance across key economic, governmental, and infrastructure sectors.
The UAE ranked first globally in the Economic Performance category and led 21 individual indicators, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainable growth.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, described the achievement as a reflection of the nation’s long-term vision and dedication to excellence.
“Competitiveness for us is not a ranking to chase; it is a standard we set for ourselves every day,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
The report revealed that the UAE placed among the world’s top 10 countries in 118 indicators and ranked within the top five in 67 key criteria. The country secured first place in areas including Bureaucracy, Adaptability of Government Policy, Employment, National Culture, and Quality of Air Transportation.
The UAE also ranked second globally in Citizen Trust in Artificial Intelligence, Creation of Firms, and Management of Cities, while achieving third place in Image Abroad, Tourism Receipts, and Society’s Access to Artificial Intelligence.
The 2026 edition of the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook assessed 70 economies using a combination of statistical data and executive opinion surveys. Countries were evaluated across four major pillars: Economic Performance, Government Efficiency, Business Efficiency, and Infrastructure.
Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to maintaining its position as a preferred destination for investors, entrepreneurs, and global talent, noting that the latest rankings demonstrate the resilience, adaptability, and effectiveness of the nation’s development model.
The results highlight the UAE’s continued progress in labour markets, digital transformation, education, infrastructure, and governance, further cementing its reputation as a global benchmark for future-focused development.
