Tehran — Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of slain Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, marking a significant leadership transition amid the ongoing regional conflict involving Israel and the United States.

The 56-year-old cleric was named the Islamic Republic’s third supreme leader by the powerful Assembly of Experts shortly after midnight on Monday, according to a statement released by the clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s top authority.

His appointment comes days after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed at the age of 86 during the first wave of US-Israeli air strikes on Tehran on February 28. The attacks marked the start of a rapidly escalating war across the Middle East.

Despite holding no formal government position during his father’s decades-long rule, Mojtaba Khamenei had long been regarded as an influential figure within Iran’s political and security establishment. Analysts say he maintained strong ties with the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which quickly pledged allegiance to him following the announcement.

Support for the new leader also came swiftly from key institutions, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the country’s armed forces, and the judiciary.

Born on September 8, 1969, in the northeastern city of Mashhad, Mojtaba Khamenei is one of six children of the late supreme leader. For years he maintained a low public profile, rarely appearing in official ceremonies or media coverage, a discretion that fueled speculation about the extent of his influence behind the scenes.

His elevation to the country’s highest authority represents a controversial shift for the Islamic Republic. The 1979 revolution had abolished the monarchy that ruled Iran for centuries, yet the appointment of the late leader’s son introduces a form of hereditary succession that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself had previously rejected in principle.

With the region already on edge due to the escalating conflict, Mojtaba Khamenei now assumes leadership of Iran at one of the most volatile moments in the country’s modern history.
