Sharjah Police has warned motorists that failing to yield to pedestrians at designated crossings carries a Dh500 fine and six black points on a driver’s licence.
The authority emphasised that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility between drivers and pedestrians, noting that pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users and face a higher risk of serious injury or death when traffic rules are ignored.
Major Saud Al Shaiba and Captain Humaid Al Hammadi, Director of the Traffic Awareness Branch, said motorists must always give priority to pedestrians at marked crossings. Pedestrians were also urged to use designated crossings and obey traffic signals to reduce the risk of accidents.
Under the traffic regulations:
- Drivers who fail to give priority to pedestrians at designated crossings face a Dh500 fine and six black points.
- Pedestrians who cross outside designated areas or ignore crossing signals face a Dh400 fine.
Sharjah Police said awareness campaigns are being conducted to promote responsible behaviour among all road users, especially in residential areas, school zones, and busy commercial districts where pedestrian traffic is high.
The warning forms part of ongoing road safety efforts, including campaigns during Ramadan, aimed at reducing fatal crashes and improving overall road safety.
